Palarinjal Sree Mahadeva Temple

Palarinjal Sree Mahadeva Temple is an ancient shiva temple located at Keezhpally,Iritty. This temple history dates back to over 2500 years. But it is believed that the pooja started before 5400 years.

Hindu traditions say that the temple was built by Parasurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu and the legend creator of Kerala.

It is believed that the temple is related with the story Dakhshayagnam of Kottiyoor Temple,Kannur- Sati, the daughter of Daksha, a descendant of Lord Brahma, marries Lord Shiva against the wish of her father. This annoys the king (Daksha) and he performs a yagna (to insult Shiva), where he invites all gods except his son-in-law (Lord Shiva). Sati attends this sacrifice against the wishes of Shiva and is insulted by her father. Unable to bear this, Sati kills herself by burning in the fire.

Enraged at the loss of Satidevi, Shiva opened his third eye. Then appeared Veerabhadra with a 1000 arms and carrying weapons in each hand. He destroyed Daksha's sacrifice and cut off Daksha's head.

Since the yaga was stopped, the Gods feared that many difficulties may arise in the future. The Gods along with Brahma and Vishnu went to Kailas and sought Shiva's help. Shiva was pacified and all of them reached the yaga place and restored the yaga. The dead were brought back to life. Daksha's head was destroyed in the yaga fire and was replaced by a goats head. Daksha pleaded to Shiva for his arrogance and was given Moksha.

Kottiyoor is believed to be the spot of the ancient Dakshayaga.
